HOBOKEN -- It's starting already.

The Hoboken mayor/council election isn't until 2013, but apparently, the midnight flyers have only just begun.

Midnight flyers are unsigned campaign materials that are left on cars or slipped under doors overnight, often to prevent scrutiny and often just before an election.

New Jersey election law says that campaign advertisements must say on the materials who paid for them, and these do not, although it's unknown for now whether these were paid for by a campaign fund or just copies made by a resident or activist.

This morning, photocopied flyers were found under the windshield wipers of parked cars near the waterfront. The flyers take issue with a possible consulting job to be given to Ian Sacs, the city's director of parking and transportation, who is leaving the post on Oct. 15 and moving to Europe.

City officials have said that Sacs has agreed to help with the transition to a new director, but that there are no terms in place for a consulting contract right now.

City spokesman Juan Melli said that Sacs agreed to "assist with completing major ongoing projects on a consulting basis." No contract has been given or decided upon, and no decision has been made as of yet, he said.

The flyers say, "If you quit your job and moved to Europe, would your boss keep you on the payroll? Dawn Zimmer would!" At the bottom, they say, "Tell Zimmer to stop taking care of her friends and worry about parking!"

What do you think? Comment below.

Mid-night flyers are much cheaper than weekly half page ads in the Hoboken Reporter from your Civic Assoc. and if people get upset about their crude disengenious content you can pretend you are not behind them

1. *Sacs, not Saks.

2."What" should be capitlalized.

3. Due to the nature of the headline and most of the story, this story appears to be about the fact that a midnight flyer appeared even though the campaign has not yet begun. This would render the flyers the *subject rather than a *source of a story. However I will have to call on Comprehension Grader for this area.

I'm confused about the question "what do you think?"

1. Is the HR asking what we think about the use of midnight flyers to smear Director Saks and Mayor Zimmer? If so then my answer is that its both slimy and pathetic.

2. Or is the HR asking what we think about the supposed issues raised by the midnight flyers, thus legitimizing and encouraging the use of this unethical tactic? If so, then my answer is that I don't believe it is both slimy and pathetic for a newspaper to treat anonymous midnight flyers as a news source.

oops - meant "I believe" not "I don't believe." Thought I better correct it before "commentgrader" started to spam the thread.

Ian is leaving and now they will need a new punching bag. Thanks for the Reporter for publishing this and saying what the truth is. Lots of people will get these and not know what it is about. We stand to get a lot of these flyers over the next 14 months.

Pesky campaign laws !

Let's see Councilman Michael Russo who is having some missing campaign money problems and has been known to constantly try berate Ian Sacs at City Council meetings comes to mind as a posibility.

I am sure that the usual anti-administration suspects have firewalls in place to give them some deniability if the Hoboken Reporter even attempted asked if they were behind this sort of dreck.

Remember Councilwoman saying something like "If you can't prove it I will say no " when asked a question she didn't want to answer on the record.

Looks professional to me.

Perhaps ask Mike Russo about his hidden account or maybe it was run through Beth Mason's 'civic' organization.

Ian did an amazing job, a short time consulting will ease transition. No more waiting list at the parking decks, bike paths, corner cars, renovations to PATH area, professionalism brought back to the HPU, the list goes on
