HUDSON COUNTY -- U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, a Hoboken resident and former Union City mayor, had an unpaid intern in his Senate office who's an alleged undocumented immigrant and registered sex offender, according to a story released Wednesday by the Associated Press.

The story says that the 18-year-old Peruvian intern was arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs office in front of his New jersey home on Election Day, Nov. 6.

According to the story: "The Homeland Security Department instructed federal agents not to arrest him until after Election Day, a U.S. official involved in the case told the AP."

The man remains in custody and may be deported, the story says.

According to the story, Menendez "said his staff was notified Monday, and he personally learned about the case from AP's reporting and knew nothing about whether DHS delayed the arrest. The senator said his staff asks interns whether they are in the country legally but cannot check to be sure.
