After showing signs of turning the corner, the Jets (0-7) fell prey to some old habits as they suffered a 32-12 defeat at the hands of the Colts in game one of their week six Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Indoor Flag Football Junior Division double-header. Game two found the Jets fired up as they took to the court to face the Bears (4-2) in hopes of righting the ship. The Jets got on the board quickly as Devin Herring rumbled 30 yards to paydirt and a 6-0 Jets’ lead. After a great defensive stand, the Jets stubbed their toes again by getting caught in their own end zone for a safety, cutting their lead to 6-2.
The Jets brushed off the miscue and made another defensive stand as Thomas Canela, Josh Belber, and Adam Brash kept the Bears’ high-powered offense in check. This time, the Jets’ offense stepped up as Brian “Hot Wheels” Pipher sprinted in for a 15-yard TD, followed by Devin Herring’s two-point grab, giving the Jets a 14-2 advantage. With their offense limping along, the Bears turned to their iron-willed halfback Matt Miceli, who answered the call with a 30-yard TD catch and a two-point grab to cut the Jets’ lead to 14-10. It took the Jets just one play to stretch their lead to 20-10 as Brian Pipher left the Bears’ defense in his wake as he sailed coast to coast for his second TD of the game.
Once again, the Jets’ defense dug in to stall the Bears’ offense, only to help the Bears’ cause with yet another safety, making it 20-12, Jets. Things started to heat up in a big way when the Bears’ Matt Miceli turned a dive play into a wire-to-wire TD masterpiece as the Jets’ lead narrowed to 20-18. A determined Jets’ squad then took less than 10 seconds to match the Bears’ score as Devin Herring rushed for his second TD of the game. Then he trumped the Bears by adding a two-point toss to Kyle Arano to take a 28-18 lead. Trailing by 10, the Bears started to make headway as Michael Egan, Ryan Griffin and Victor Mendolaro followed the lead of their lionhearted QB Drew Radil and moved the ball into Jets’ territory.
With the ball at their doorstep, the Jets’ defense brick-walled the Bears’ offense to preserve their 10-point advantage. The Bears’ defense also did some heavy lifting and after forcing the Jets to go three-and-out, the Bears’ offense made it 28-26. Alejandro “See Ya” Cifuentes had a goal-to-goal gallop and a two-point haul. With the calm of a seasoned vet, the Jets’ rookie QB Devin Herring sealed the hard-fought victory by drilling a TD and a two-point strike to their electrifying playmaker Brian Pipher to clinch a 36-26 victory.
