MARTIAL ARTS COMPETITION

The Superstar Open Martial Arts competition, held on March 3 at the Marriott Airport Hotel in Newark, featured students from the Bayonne High School Karate League and Bayonne Martial Arts Center. Ryan Colon from the BMAC became the grappling champion, competed in the BHSK League in the Young Men’s Division for 16- and 17-year-old novices, and placed first in Kumite and second in Kata. He also moved up to the Men’s Novice Division in Kumite and took first place, as well as competed in the Continuous Fighting Division and placed first. Rachel Kinigstein competed in the Orange Belt Division in Kata and placed second. Marc Surujballi of the BHSK competed in the Men’s Beginner Division and took second in both Kata and Kumite. Tristan Cotto competed in the 16- and 17-year-old Novice Division and placed first in Kata, Kumite, and Continuous Kumite. Michael Tagliareni of the BHSK competed in the 16- and 17-year-old Novice Division and placed second in Kata, Point Sparring, and Continuous Sparring. Edwin Chung of the BHSK competed in the 16- and 17-year-old Beginner Division and placed first in Kata, Point Sparring, and Continuous Sparring. Melissa Rios from BMAC competed in the 11- and 12-year-old Novice Division and placed first in Kata and Kumite. The students are trained by Masters Tom Clarkin, 7th Dan; Will Toolen, 6th Dan; and Keith Marsh, 4th Dan. Center classes are held at 625 Avenue C.
