It’s not playoff time yet, but for the (5-0) Penguins and the (3-2) Devils their week five Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Sr. Division Floor Hockey bout certainly had a playoff vibe. Right from the get go, the pace was intense as the Devils grabbed a 1-0 lead when captain Mackenzie Woods assisted Colin Woods on a scoring blast. The Devils’ defense weathered the Penguins’ fiery attack in the early going as co-captain Jared Radil, Melanie Bonilla and Drew Radil brick-walled every Penguins’ charge. After being shutdown offensively, the Penguins hit their stride as the “Twin Engines” Jake Nowak and J. P. Egan, teamed up with Egan assisting Nowak on the game tying shot. The 1-1 tie lasted less than two minutes as “Team Woods” cashed in again as Mackenzie Woods once again assisted Colin Woods on a scoring blast. Down 2-1, the Penguins turned to their sibling dynamos to reknot the bout as Josh Verzosa assisted Alisa Verzosa on the game tying bolt. For the next 10 minutes, both teas’ defenses dug in as the Devils’ Josh Greenbaum and the Penguins’ Matt Doyle guarded the nets like “junkyard dogs”. Finally, after the ten minute scoring drought the Penguins’ league leading offense went into overdrive as Jan Patrick Egan (1), Jake Nowak (2) ad Alisa Verzosa (1) zeroed in for four unanswered goals. Assisting on the four goal explosion were Malachi Smith (2), J. P. Egan (1) and John Bautista (1). As the Penguins built a 6-2 advantage, the Devils kept plugging away but as the Penguins clinched their 6th victory goalie, Matt Doyle, also notched his 6th win at net with a 6-2 win.
