Dear Editor:

We are writing to express our sincere gratitude to the teachers and staff at Wallace Public School for an amazing seven years. It's hard to believe that it was seven years ago that our son entered kindergarten at Wallace. Hoboken has many school options and we, like many parents, fretted about finding the right school for our son. We talked to parents, researched and visited all the open houses but it was at Wallace School that we immediately felt comfortable. Wallace is a more traditional school, like the kind of school most of us attended as children. It is strong in the core subjects, offering FOSS Science, Singapore Math and opportunities for those advanced students needing a challenge: Johns Hopkins and Gifted & Talented programs. We were impressed with the well-maintained school, the double gym, the music and art classrooms, computer labs, SMART boards, full service cafeteria, and play yard for outdoor recess. Basically everything you would expect, and a little bit more, of a good public school.

When we talk to pre-school parents about Wallace we sense the usual hesitations about attending an "urban" school. We had the same hesitations ourselves, which were immediately allayed after attending a school open house. Because, of course, what matters most is the quality of education for your child. That's really all it's ever been about for us. Our son has had an excellent academic experience throughout his seven years. And if we were to ever sense that our child wasn't learning and achieving to the best of his ability, then we'd immediately look for alternatives. But that's never happened at Wallace. The teaching quality and curriculum are excellent, and the classroom environment is disciplined and focused on learning. For instance this past year, our son, a "math and science" kid with a passion for art enjoyed the multi-disciplinary Art-in-Motion class project. This STEAM project (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) was a collaborative partnership with Stevens Institute of Technology and Wallace School. Students created mechanical sculptures that were displayed in the Hoboken High School Art Show at the Monroe Center.

Of course it has been the people, the teachers, the staff and the families, that have made our experience at Wallace outstanding. The teachers are dedicated, nurturing, innovative and demanding – willing to push the students out of their comfort zones with full support and encouragement. We have enjoyed the strong community of families at Wallace School thanks to the PTO which organizes a wide range of activities throughout the school year culminating in the fantastic Wallace School Field Day.

We're not sure where the time has gone over the last seven years but thanks to our positive experience at Wallace School we're looking forward to the next phase in our son's academic development at the Hoboken Junior Senior High School this fall.
