Jersey City announces cooling centers for the week

JERSEY CITY – Several cooling centers will be open or will have extended hours this week during the heat wave that is expected to bring several days of temperatures in the 90s. Hours will also be extended at six public libraries through Friday.

The Mary McLeod Bethune Community Life Center, at 140 Martin Luther King Dr., will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Friday, and the Pershing Field Community Center, at the corner of Summit Avenue and Pershing Field Plaza, will be open every day through Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Two senior centers – the Joseph Connors Senior Center, at 28 Paterson St. and the Maureen Collier Community Center, at 335 Bergen Ave. – will be used as additional cooling sites this week. Both locations will be open through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Six public libraries will extend their evening hours and close at 8 p.m. each weekday through Friday. The six libraries that will remain open during the evenings include: the Main Branch Library at 472 Jersey Ave.; Five Corners Library, at 678 Newark Ave.; Greenville Library, at 1841 John F. Kennedy Blvd.; the Glenn D. Cunningham Library, at 275 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr.; Miller Branch Library at 489 Bergen Ave.; and the Heights Branch Library, at 14 Zabriskie Ave.

All residents, especially the elderly, disabled, pregnant women, and children under the age of two are encouraged to stay indoors and to take advantage of the cooling facilities, if necessary.
