The Divine Liturgy was celebrated Aug. 14 at Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church for Anastasios Stamatiou, 82. He passed away Aug. 8. Born in Andros, Greece, Anastasios served in the Greek Navy and came to the United States in 1951. He began working at Mel’s Bar in Jersey City and became owner of the State Coffee Shop in New York from 1961 to 1978. In 1981, Anastasios began a real estate career with the purchase of several buildings in Jersey City. A longtime member of both St. Demetrios and Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church, Anastasios was an avid botanist, with a passion for gardening and won an award for having grown the largest squash. He was a husband, father and grandfather who loved people and good conversation. Anastasios is survived by his wife Helen (nee: Ortzian); father of Alexandros (Lori Anne), Neko and Demetrios; grandfather of Alexander (US Army Special Forces Training), Anastasios and Maximos; uncle and father figure to Carolyn; brother of George, Bill and Stamatis; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
