When a local cab driver gave Weehawken resident Joan Doljan a ride recently, he learned something that turned out to be music to his ears. Doljan, the owner of Pet Depot in Weehawken, listened intently as the driver told her about his canary, who was quiet and seldom moved around the cage, even though the bird wasn't sick. Doljan recommended a special bird seed known for its natural blend of vitamins and minerals. The cabbie was so curious to see if it would help his couch potato canary that he purchased a bag when he dropped Doljan off at her shop. "I saw him a few weeks later and he told me his canary had done something for the very first time - the bird sang," says Doljan. "Now the canary starts to sing and flap its wings when he sees the guy coming with the food. It's amazing how much a nutritious diet can change a pet's life." Doljan, a firm believer in the benefits of natural foods and homeopathic remedies, opened Pet Depot a year ago to offer these alternatives to people who wanted to provide a healthier lifestyle for their pets. The store's shelves are stocked with a variety of premium pet foods, homeopathic remedies, vitamins, supplements and flavorful treats for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, rodents and fish. (The store does not sell live animals or insects.) "People tell me they can now get the specialty foods and products for their pets that they once had to carry home from New York," says Doljan. For example, customers will find deluxe vitamins; digestive enzymes to improve the overall health of your pets and to rid cats of hairballs; and flower essences to calm anxious pets, as well as a whole range of other homeopathic remedies. The store also carries gentle shampoos, soaps and products for cleaning up after messy critters. There's even a wide selection of pet accessories and furniture, scratching posts and toys. Best of all, Pet Depot offers free delivery for orders of $25 or more to Hoboken, Jersey City, Guttenberg, North Bergen, West New York, Union City, Edgewater, Cliffside Park, Secaucus and Weehawken. Same day service is provided, when possible. The store - with its signature yellow awning - is located close to the Lincoln Tunnel and New York Waterway ferry. Just stop by Pet Depot and place your order, or call or send a fax. Helpful and experienced staff members are ready to answer questions and offer suggestions. Members of local animal welfare agencies in New Jersey who have registered with the store receive a 10 percent discount at Pet Depot by showing their current membership card. These discounts are available on food, supplies and homeopathic remedies. In addition, Pet Depot posts information about animal welfare groups on its bulletin board. For the past year, Doljan has volunteered with the liberty Humane Society. This non-profit is raising funds to build a new animal shelter in partnership with Jersey City. "We've created an atmosphere at Pet Depot where the health and well being of pets is our top priority, both in the home and in the community," says Doljan. Pet Depot is located at 4708 Park Ave. in Weehawken and can be reached by calling 330-8111 or by faxing to 330-3346. Visa, Mastercard and Discover are accepted, as well as personal checks.
