Dear Editor: On March 30, 2000, I attended a meeting at the Connors School hosted by Board President David Anthony and City Council President Nellie Moyeno. The meeting was meant to address the concerns of the residents of the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA). However, I strongly question their intentions especially where there is an election only three short weeks away. Since January the residents of the HHA have had problems with their current lease agreement. The two sitting presidents did not take any course of action then. Councilman Ramos, Jr. and his supporters took immediate action by holding a meeting at the Shannon Lounge obtaining attorneys on behalf the residents of the HHA and setting a possible course of action back in early February. School Board President David Anthony stated that this was the first time he was meeting with most of us. Mr. Anthony, you have been on the Board of Education and I'm glad to see that it has only taken you six years to realize that a majority of the children that attend our Hoboken schools live in the HHA. Mr. Anthony, after serving as School Board Education President for six years, I find it hard to take you seriously when you provided a party-like atmosphere with a DJ and food rather than providing serious dialogue. As a member of the public spoke up at the meeting, Mr. Anthony did not agree with what was being said, so he had the plug on the microphone pulled. Mr. Anthony I thought you were going to listen to all concerns not just the ones that suited your needs. As for City Council President Moyeno it was no surprise to see her because the only time she shows up is during election time. You have been a member of the City Council for seven years and have ignored our needs because within those seven years, our living conditions have deteriorated. I hold Mayor Russo and his administration directly responsible for this because he has appointed HHA commissioners to serve his needs rather than those of the community. Our voices in the HHA have been ignored for years, but now with the right representation our voices and concerns are being heard. We will be fooled no longer by members of the Russo Administration and we will not rest until all the HHA commissioners are replaced by individuals that truly care about our community. (With the exception of Fr. Michael). There's an old saying, "You could lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." And if we continue to elect these types of people we're all gonna sink. Also in the May election Mayor Russo's team claimed 4th Ward Councilman Ramos, Jr. won because of his ethnic background rather than on his ethics. Now I feel they are being extremely hypocritical because the only reason they are running Wanda Santana-Alicea is because she is Hispanic. I feel she will only be an Hispanic rubber stamp for the Russo Team. Let's vote on ethics not ethnic orientation! Linda Walker President Jackson South Tenants Association
