Dear Editor: I think it's great that New Jersey Transit is initiating the essential seven days a week, continuous shuttle bus service linking Liberty State Park's Light Rail Station with every major park destination, including the South Overlook Lawn, the new "Green Park" area with its gigantic playground, the Terminal, Interpretive Center, and marina complex. On May 17, the NJT Board approved the mini-bus service with a five year contract. The Friends top priority in this past year has been to work on the establishment of a shuttle system. In a letter to The Hudson Reporter, September 12, 1999, I wrote that park visitors just can't be stranded at the station. There aren't even sidewalks going from the station into the park. NJT deserves credit for realizing how important it is to enable people to complete their mass transit trip to our urban waterfront oasis. I thank all the people who wrote letters to NJT, and also want to publicly thank the elected officials who responded to may request for intervention on this issue. They are: Senators Torricelli and Lautenberg, Congressman Menendez, State Senator Kenny, Assemblyman Doria, County Executive Janiszewski, Mayor Schundler and Freeholders O'Dea and Fitzgibbons. Executive Director Sue Mack of the county's Hudson Transportation Management Association, joined me, starting a few years ago in advocating for a park shuttle system. The details of the shuttle service were worked on for three months by a dedicated NJT bus planner, Steve Lax, who told me that the fare will be $1 for unlimited rides during the day, and that seniors and children will have discount fares. The buses are accessible to people in wheelchairs. I hope thousands of people this summer use the Light Rail and the shuttle service to enjoy our beautiful park.
