Even though Hoboken's municipal election is more than a month away, I know how I will vote: Dave Roberts for Mayor and the Hoboken United slate--Ruben Ramos, Carol Marsh and Tony Soares--for Council.
This show of support may surprise a few of my neighbors and friends, but since moving to Hoboken 22 years ago, I have always voted the reform ticket and have always believed these candidates could win (Vezetti did!)Dave may not fit everyone's definition of a reformer, but in my mind he is, and a courageous one. Equally important, he and his team can be elected. They represent this city's best chance to slow the ubiquitous development and to remove the stink of fear and acrimony from our local politics.
I have known Dave for many years and I understand how difficult it was for him and for his family to break with the Russo administration. This was not a decision motivated by political opportunism, but one which was inspired by affection for a city being ruined by mindless development which has overwhelmed an inadequate infrastructure. Hoboken's government has been intellectually and morally bankrupt for a long time and to Dave's credit, he woke up three years ago and realized something had to give.
It is not too late to put the brakes on some of this craziness and to allow Hoboken to catch its breath and to become liveable once again. Please consider voting for Dave Roberts and his slate of capable candidates for Council; they represent Hoboken's best hope.
