Last month, three youths – Jaiden Washington, Keyshaun Wiggins, and Kareef Bostick – were playing behind a building on Kensington Avenue when they noticed movement from a garbage bin. When they opened the bin they discovered a newborn baby boy and ran to call for help.
Arturo Rivas, a resident who lived nearby, ran to assist the three boys and called his wife, Rebecca Wormers, who performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the baby.
The baby, who was born prematurely, weighed less than three pounds when he was discovered with the umbilical cord still attached and his nose and mouth filled with facial tissues.
He was soon taken to Jersey City Medical Center for evaluation.
The city on Wednesday commended Wormers, Washington, Wiggins, and Bostick for their collective effort to save the infant’s life.
A 39-year-old woman who is suspected of being the infant’s mother has been arrested in the case.
