Some of the top DJs in the country have spun at the Love Sexy music lounge on Hudson Street in Hoboken. They have included Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys and Erick Morillo of Subliminal Records.

Now, Love Sexy will host DJ Yogi Haughton from Scotland (Thursday, Aug. 16) as he makes his first appearance in New Jersey.

Love Sexy is known for its quality blend of house, techno, hip-hop and garage sounds, according to owner John Vargas. He was intrigued by DJ Yogi's growing reputation in Europe as one of the premier up-and-coming DJs and decided to invite him to spin his records in Hoboken.

"He plays good music. He will be our guest DJ," Vargas said last week. "A lot of house DJs just play one set. He (DJ Yogi) will play more variety."

DJ Yogi has been credited with bringing house music to Scotland during his residence at the Hoochie Coochie club in the town of Edinburgh, according to Vargas. He has been on the same bill in Europe with acts like Masters at Work, Sounds of Blackness, Sam Dees, Todd Terry, Leroy Hutson, Ten City, Tony Humphries, Roy Ayres, Roger Sanchez, and Galliano. DJ Yogi has also released several recordings with record labels in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.

"His vibe is one that will make them get on the dance floor," Vargas said. "Anybody who is into DJ culture will know who he is. He's respected."

Moved over

The venue's history dates back to 1991. It was first located on the corner of Newark and River streets before moving to Hudson Street between First and Second streets.

"Back then, Love Sexy was one of the first underground dance parties, featuring the best in underground house and disco classics," according to Vargas.

Today, Love Sexy continues to be at the forefront of innovative music, providing a warm and welcoming venue for artists in all genres of music. Inside, there is a lounge area with two small bars, a stage in the back and a DJ booth.

"Whether you're a pit-moshing punk or a head spinning home boy, we show you much love," Vargas said. "I try to bring pretty big names and still keep it underground and fresh."

Vargas is a lifelong Hoboken resident. In addition to operating Love Sexy, he produces music and scouts local talent. Music is his passion.

"Without music, life would be pretty boring," he said.

DJ Yogi will perform from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. There is a $5 cover charge at the door.

Love Sexy is located on 104 Hudson St. Its hours of operation are Thursdays from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. For more information call 656-1136 or visit them on the web at www.love-sexy.com
