I, Steve Lipski, Councilman of Ward C and loyal Democrat, wholeheartedly and enthusiastically endorse Council President L. Harvey Smith for State Senator of the 31st Legislative District. I also support the two incumbent assembly candidates running with him, Honorable Joseph Doria and Honorable Elba Perez-Cinciarelli. Each has earned and deserves our support.
I have known L. Harvey Smith for a long time. He has been very influential in my life while I was a student at Dickinson High School. Later in life Harvey encouraged me when I ran as an independent for city council in 1997. He shared with me how proud he was that a former student of his was running for an elected office. I didn't win in 1997, but Harvey complimented me upon the manner in which I ran my campaign. After the '97 election I spoke with Harvey at length about what he does as councilman, and I watched him in action. He is a caring, hard-working and fair leader. He is a man of integrity.
In 2001, after talking to and seeing two of my former teachers (Tom DeGise and Harvey) on the council for four years, I decided to run again. I ran on Tom DeGise's ticket; Harvey ran on another ticket. Nevertheless, Harvey, again, proved himself to be a gentleman and encouraged his former student to give it his best. I did, and this time I won.
For the last year and a half I have had the privilege to sit on the council with Harvey. In this time, I have grown in my appreciation, love and respect for the man. There are not many politicians I can refer to in this way but Harvey is exceptional, and he has earned it.
Inasmuch as Harvey has supported my hopes and dreams s a student, friend and Councilman of Ward C, I will be wholeheartedly supporting his bid for the state senate of New Jersey and those running with him, and I would ask everyone else to do the same. Let's stay the course with a team of seasoned leaders who are consistent, competent and courageous.
Steve Lipski
Councilman, Ward C
