Dear Editor:

Two years ago I was elected to the city council, along with Ruben Ramos, and Tony Soares on a promise to clean up city hall. I still have the tee shirt.

What I don't have, is the satisfaction of seeing our promises turned into policy. Within days of Dave Roberts' inaugural speech, Tony and I discovered that it was easier to run on a platform of reform, than to successfully implement one. But we have not given up trying.

When I was elected two years ago I viewed my campaign promises as a moral contract with the city of Hoboken. I still do. And up until now that contract has not been fulfilled.

Fixing city finances, improving parking, and implementing a rational development policy are as needed now as they were two years ago. We need now what we needed then -- leaders who put making progress above making headlines, leaders who put finding solutions above finding scapegoats.

That, not any desire to be a 'professional politician", is why this January I joined with other concerned citizens to form the Hoboken Alliance for Accountable Government. We fielded six candidates, didn't take pay-to-play contributions, and are doing pretty well, with two seats (out of nine) on the new City Council, and three candidates locked in run-offs.

I am asking today for your help in keeping the promises I remember from two years ago. If you never heard them, or just need a refresher, check out the back page of this paper. If you agree that we must do more with less, that development should work for all of Hoboken, and that we still must clean up City Hall, then I ask for your support for three Hobokenites who share our vision.

Please vote this Tuesday for Ron Rosenberg - 1st Ward, Beth Mason -2nd Ward, and Daniel deCavaignac-6th Ward. Polls are open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you need information on where to vote, or just want to help call (201) 420-6600.

Carol Marsh
Councilwoman
