The Hoboken Arts & Music Festival presents three stages of live music from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free. Patti Smith, a pioneer of the New York punk scene, is the headliner. Local performers include AJ Azzarto and the New Hoboken Four, Skanatra, the Demolition String Band, and the Damn Lovelys. It's open-mic night at O'Donoghue's in Hoboken, hosted by New Vintage. P.J. Ryan's in Jersey City has karaoke starting at 8:30 p.m.

It's happy hour all night at Oddfellows Rest in Hoboken. Welcomed Words poetry open-mic night, with music by Mark Gianotti, at Rodeo-Ristra in Hoboken, 8 p.m. Blues Jam with Big Ed at 9:30 p.m. at Scotland Yard in Hoboken.
Tuesday, May 18:
The jazz combo Third Tuesday plays the Goldhawk in Hoboken at 9 p.m. Maxwell's has N.J. Songwriters in the Round with Andrew Fromm, Jared Lee, and Wes Hutchinson at 8 p.m., no cover. And it's Ski Club Night at Willie McBride's, starting at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, May 19:
Battle of the Bands featuring Evan Toth and the Excuses at 9 p.m., Green Marie at 10 p.m., and Avarice at 11 p.m. at the Whiskey Bar in Hoboken. Rodeo-Ristra presents Blow-Up Radio, Johnathan Andrew, Danny Roselle, Dawn Botti, and Gibby in its Metamorphic Original Music Series, 9 p.m. Maxwell's has Butch Walker and The Honorary Title starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door. And it's Swing Night at Willie McBride's, starting at 7 p.m.
Thursday, May 20:
Todd Sheaffer (formerly of From Good Homes) plays the Whiskey Bar in Hoboken. Surrey Lane kicks off their national tour at the Goldhawk at 9 p.m. Maxwell's has Okkervil River, Tim Easton, and Shearwater starting at 8:30 p.m., $8.
Friday, May 21:
Back from their recent U.S. tour, Jersey City indie rockers Mezzanine~C14 play Uncle Joe's with IfIHadaHifi and 50 Watt Head. Humdaisy, The Play Trains, and 12:01 play Maxwell's starting at 9:30 p.m., $7. The Whiskey Bar in Hoboken has Life Speed.
Saturday, May 22:
Jersey musician Val Emmich, who's appeared on MTV's TRL and Advance Warning, plays Maxwell's with Particle Zoo, Hey Tiger, and Mike Tichy at 9 p.m., $8. Uncle Joe's In Jersey City has Snakes and Music, and the Finals. Jake Stigers, Soul's Release, and Butterspy play the Shannon in Hoboken.
