Jersey City may not be known as the boating capital of the world, but it will come close to that description next week.

The New York/New Jersey International In-Water Boat Show will set anchor in Liberty State Park at the Liberty Landing Marina from Sept. 16 to Sept. 19.

The show, in its third year, will see over 300 boats showcased, ranging from $15,000 motorboats to a 112-foot custom yacht that costs upwards of $10 million.

Boating vendors, primarily from New Jersey as well as some others from New York and Connecticut will be floating their wares to an estimated 10,000 attendees.

Dario Medina, the vice president of operations for the Liberty Marine Marketing Group that has organized the show since its inception, said that this year there will some new additions to the boat show that would appeal to the nautically challenged.

"We also wanted to add a little different flavor. Part of the reason is that we wanted to appeal to the same demographics, but who were not interested in boat shows," said Medina.

The other offering is the debut of the International Gentleman's World Exposition, where luxury items such as exotic sports cars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris, along with custom-made bikes, jewelry, and cigars, will be on display and for sale. As Medina put it, it's "big toys for big boys."

Accompanying the expo will be the Jersey City Waterfront Jazzfest with jazz music performers headlining on Thursday Sept. 16 at Newport Town Square and Friday Sept. 17 at Exchange Place. The boat show, the gentleman's expo and the jazz festival will be part of the larger Jersey City Waterfront Festival.

Also, the boat show itself will feature a food court with gourmet cooking provided by Jersey City restaurants, games for children to enjoy, and musical entertainment courtesy of Budweiser Beers.

But the main attraction will be the boat show, which is part of a circuit of boat shows taking place in various cities down the East Coast from this summer into fall. However, there are several factors that separate this particular boat show from the others held in locales as Atlantic City and Fort Lauderdale.

"If you're a serious buyer, you want to demo the boat," said Ken Tesler of the Liberty Marina Marketing Group and producer of the boat show. "The other boat shows literally block the boats, but buyers want to stand and see the whole boat and take the boat out into the open waters."

Tesler emphasized that it benefits the boat show to have its location is near the Hudson River, which allows for boats to have their dock. And the boat show is one of few of its kind in that it is held both indoors and outdoors, as a huge stage tent the size of a building will be erected in case of bad weather.

Tesler said that there's more local involvement with the even than in past years, with the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation playing a large role in making this event happen. There will also be marine vendors with local offices who will participate, such as D&R Boats and Liberty Yachts, both of whom have offices in Jersey City.
