Dear Editor:

I have been around a long time and have often heard responsible citizens debate whether appointed School Boards or elected School Boards best serve the education of our young ("Keep politics out of education" v. "Let the people decide").

But I have never seen a situation such as in West New York, where petitions to put the question on elected School Boards on the ballot did not have enough signatures, yet Mayor Albio Sires, who now appoints School Board members, and his Board of Commissioners, have decided to put the question on the ballot anyway so the people can be heard.

This is very high quality democratic leadership.
