His criminal status could change, as he is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation at the Forensic Hospital in Trenton. Also, local authorities are working with the State Police to find body parts in the house that have not been recovered.
Then, on Monday, Fausto Valentin Garcia, 54 of Wegman Parkway was shot dead at approximately 5:30 a.m. in the bodega that he owned on the corner of Communipaw and Whiton avenues when three men attempted to rob Garcia and an associate as he was opening the store for business.
Also killed was one of the suspects in the robbery attempt, 15 year-old Calvin McRae.
An associate of Garcia in the store was wounded and was treated at the Jersey City Medical Center.
By the end of last week, two suspects were under arrest. According to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward J. DeFazio, Arshan Little, 19, of Gardner Avenue in Jersey City and Anthony "Dolla" Hicks, 20, of Carteret Avenue also in Jersey City, were each being held on $750,000 bail and each charged with felony murder.
Both men were allegedly carrying handguns, according to DeFazio.
DeFazio said that a different person, believed to also be a local resident, was involved in the robbery as a getaway driver and was still being sought.
'He wasn't looking for a penny, just friendship'
A service was held for the late Fausto Valentin Garcia on Thursday at the Introcaso-Angelo Funeral Home in Jersey City.
Family, friends and strangers came to pay their respects to the man who had an impact upon their lives. They also came to console his widow, Ines, who was standing over his coffin sobbing uncontrollably.
Fausto Valentin Garcia ran the store for more than 20 years and was known in the neighborhood as the man who would let you pay for an item later when you didn't have enough money. He was also known for always opening his Union Superrette around 5:30 a.m. and closing at 10 p.m.
For a number of customers who became friends, he was known as "Vale" or "Valentine."
A bystander named Robert, who has lived in the Lafayette section for 40 years, said that he was waiting for a bus on Pacific Avenue around the time the shooting occurred.
"I heard some commotion and then I made my way down to the house, and there I saw [Garcia] lying in the aisle in a pool of blood," said Robert.
He said he knew Garcia as 'Valentine."
"He was such a good man," Robert said. "When my baby needed Pampers and I didn't have enough money, he would just give it to you and tell you to pay him later," said Robert.
Josephine Figueroa lives a few houses down from the store. Figueroa remembered joking with Garcia about his routine of opening his store so early in the morning.
"I was in his store on Saturday and we were joking around about insurance policies and what if something happens to him, who will take over the store," she said. "And I asked him what if someone robbed him, how would he protect himself. He said he's wasn't worried about that, that he had a bat."
As it turned out, Garcia tried to defend himself with a bat before he was shot twice in the chest.
Nellie, a resident of the city's Greenville section, said, "He wasn't like some storeowners who just wanted to make money. He wasn't looking for a penny, just friendship."
Garcia is survived by his wife, Ines, three daughters, and a son. He was born in the Dominican Republic and will be buried there on Saturday.
Where did 'Pixie' go? When Josanna "Pixie" Suvino disappeared in mid-January from her Bleecker Street home, her neighbors at first thought that she may have gone one of her trips to visit her children, or entered the hospital due to her health condition.
But when her husband started handing out flyers inquiring about her whereabouts and when he started telling anyone who would listen to him that she ran off with his money, neighbors became concerned.
One neighbor, Jose, lives with his wife and daughter near the Suvino house. He said he was used to seeing "Pixie" almost all the time.
"If I was out early in the morning, she was usually out sitting in front of the house," he said. "And when I came home at night, she was there waiting in front of the house."
But Jose never suspected what became of his neighbor.
"Like everyone else on the block, when I found out what had happened to her I was shocked," he said. "Nothing like this happens around here."
What happened to "Pixie," according to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward J. DeFazio, was that she was killed first with a blunt object and was then dismembered.
By the end of the week, the front porch of the Suvino home was piled with flowers, candles, and large oak tag board inscribed with words of love: "We will miss you, Pixie" and "God has a special place for you, Pixie."
Future developments DeFazio said that one of the suspects in the Garcia case, Anthony Hicks, is a suspect in a carjacking in the parking lot of the Crown Fried Chicken restaurant on Communipaw Avenue the morning of Feb. 23. In that incident, a group of about five men attacked two Jersey City men in the restaurant's parking lot.
"That was a case that was being handled by the Major Case Squad of the Jersey City Police Department under the direction of Lieutenant Michael Kelly, who has done an excellent job also in the Garcia case," said DeFazio.
DeFazio also said that the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office was able to get a warrant as to search Suvino house for body parts that were not recovered in the initial search of the house on Mar. 11.
