Eleven outstanding employees of Hudson County who had been nominated by the Board of Chosen Freeholders to represent all county workers were honored as "Employees of Distinction" during National County Government Week at the county freeholder' chambers.

The selections were in keeping with the National Association of Counties 2005 theme of honoring county heroes, the persons who go above and beyond in providing the many services to county residents.

Honored were Thomas Burns, county director of emergency management services; Jean Byrnes, clerk to the Board of Freeholders; Edward La Tour, supervisor of motor pool and acting fleet manager; Susan Mearns, chief, Division of Housing and Community Development; Thomas McCann, chief, Division of Parks; Alex Perez, dramatics coach, High Tech High School; Florence Robinson, secretary, Board of Freeholders; Edgar Romero, supervising garage attendant; Elizabeth Spinelli, executive director of the Hudson County Economic Development Corporation; Keith Weicker, stationary engineer; and James Wheeler of the County Road Department.

"These 11 employees are representative of the more than 3,000 employees who deliver county services day in and day out and they are worthy of our thanks and appreciation," said Freeholder Chairman Silverio "Sal" Vega.

He pointed out that county employees serve America by providing a host of services such as protecting residents, responding to emergencies, saving lives in hospitals and health centers, repairing bridges, plowing snow, helping troubled youths and young adults, training laid-off workers, providing affordable housing, and spurring economic growth to produce jobs.
