Want to watch golden retrievers literally dance? Pet the micro-soft hair of a chinchilla? Look eye to eye with an iguana?
You can do all these things and more at the Sixth Annual Meadowlands Pet Expo at the Meadowlands Expo Center at Harmon Meadows the weekend of Nov. 22 to 24.
“We have many new attractions this year, as well as so many educational, fun and entertaining animals, pet vendors, and rescue groups,” said show organizer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows. “This is truly a family pet show for all ages.”
The event is expected to draw more than 10,000 attendees during its three-day run. This year’s lineup features new talent, like low-riding bulldogs and high-flying parrots.
Beefy the Skateboarding Bulldog will do some sharp twist and turns in his show. Also new is John Lege, a/k/a “That Guy with the Birds,” and his family-friendly interactive parrot program. “His performance will delight bird aficionados, who can also have their picture taken with his parrots throughout the weekend,” Garetano said.
In addition, New Jersey’s own “Bat-Man,” Joe D'Angeli, brings his informative and fun “bat cave exhibit,” which features the different types of animals who live in one.
Dog lover’s dream
In conjunction with the expo, the International Canine Kennel Club will be holding seven all-breed shows for dogs of the American and United kennel clubs and others.
These shows will include “rare breeds not seen every day,” said expo spokeswoman Nancy Hassel of Long Island Pet Professionals. “This is a dog lover’s dream, to see many different breeds in one location.”

“We’ll have a pet fashion designer from New York City who specifically does couture dog clothing,” Hassel said.
Attendees may bring their well-behaved, leashed dogs and have their pets’ photos taken for the holidays. They can also enter their canines into the fashion show/costume contest, and participate with their purebred dog in the parade.
Also, attendees can have their dog tested for the AKC Canine Good Citizen Award. Visit www.meadowlandspetexpo.com for the details.
Petting zoos & adoptable pets
“In addition to the dog area, attendees will enjoy a petting zoo, pony rides, learning about and meeting alpacas, along with many area rescue and adoptions groups with adoptable pets available,” Hassel said.
There will also be a rainforest reptile show, which will include big turtles, large amphibians, and an albino alligator.
