On Monday night, the Loew's Jersey Theatre in Journal Square became Halloween Central, with its annual show for children ages 5-16 and their parents. Over 500 people were in attendance for the program, organized and sponsored by the Friends of the Loews along with Mayor Jerramiah Healy.
The host for the evening was Pat O' Melia, host of the local radio show Hudson County's Talking and of a cable access program called The Weekly Show with Pat O' Melia.
On the itinerary was a demonstration of Tae Kwon Do by students from the DK Tae Kwon Do School in Jersey City, performances by members of the Don & Rosita Dancers group, and Okey Dokey the Clown.
But the highlight of the evening was the Halloween costume contest where children in three age groups - 5 to 8, 9 to 12, and 13 to 16 - were in the running to win a new bicycle.
When the judges made their decision, 12 lucky kids - two boys and two girls in each age group - went home with a new ride. Some of the winning costumes were a box of popcorn, "Chucky" from the Child's Play movies, and Jack the Ripper.
To cap the festivities off, there was a raffle where audience members won various prizes including a TV and a Nintendo Game Cube.
All of this made the Loew's event a treat (without the trick) for those young and old.
Mita Barot came with her two daughters, two nieces and a nephew.
"It's great; I find this really good that they do something like this," said Barot. "We need more activities like these."
13-year old Diana Elfar was a double winner in her Cleopatra costume, as she was the happy recipient of a bike and a hot/cold water dispenser. She said the best part of the show was "waiting to see if I was going to win [the costume contest]." Enter at your own peril
People lined up to get into a municipal government building at 325 Palisade Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 29. They were about to enter into a house of horrors. Well, not really.
The Jersey City Police Department Community Relations Unit and Dickinson High School students had joined forces to turn a city-owned building into a place where kids entered at their own peril as part of the city's "Halloween Fun" event.
Before the fun began, participants were greeted with these words.
"Remember, no touching and the actors won't touch you," said one student.
The various freaks and monsters banging on cages, with twin sisters doing their macabre take on "Ring Around the Rosey," and a morgue that came to life.
Some looked scared, and others placed their hands on their hearts and laughed nervously at their ordeal.
