Fifteen-year veteran educator Alfred Orecchio has finally reached the brass ring in his professional life and gained a promotion as the assistant principal at Weehawken High School.

Orecchio, who has a bachelor's degree from Saint Peter's College and a master's degree from New Jersey City University, both in Jersey City, is currently completing a second master's N.J.C.U. Orecchio, who taught ESL and day and evening classes at the Hudson County Schools of Technology, also contributed to the SRA Program and coordinated the Adult Education Program at the HCST-Career Development Center in Union City. Orecchio also worked at various centers before that, such as Secaucus and North Bergen.

His many friends tell us that he is missed greatly, but wish him well in his new venture.

Two years ago Orecchio was appointed to the Weehawken Housing Authority as a commissioner by Mayor Richard Turner, and he is involved in many township civic affairs aside from performing his many new professional duties.

Married for 14 years to his lovely wife Giovanna, they have two children. Their son Joseph was recently born and their daughter Gianna is a third-grader at the Weehawken Roosevelt School. Orecchio tells us that he has been most impressed with the quality of the teaching staff at the high school and looks forward to his monthly faculty meetings with them. He has observed that the teachers are interested in results rather than recognition, and he admires them for this trait. Orecchio also says that he looks up to Dr. Peter Oliveri, his principal, as a role model and mentor.

As an avocation, Orecchio practices the culinary arts, which obviously gives his wife Giovanna some free time during the week to relax as the husband does the cooking. What is Orecchio's favorite dish? Fettuccini Alfredo! All the best and good luck.

North Bergen's Ernest Veltre tells us that after recently going to a New York City Park Avenue dentist for a consultation, he was pleasantly surprised to find a copy of the North Bergen Reporter with this column on the waiting room reading counter! Yes, the Reporter and this column have crossed state lines, and we are happy to hear it.

Former Hudson County Hall of Famer Nicholas Mastorelli of Union City tells us that he is invited every Friday in the early morning to the 4-Star Diner in Union City to meet and greet "The Over-the-Hill-Gang" as they humorously call themselves! These retirees are former North Bergen, Weehawken, and Union City policemen, firemen and U.S. Postal employees. A lot of java must be consumed every Friday! Keep up the good humor!...

The Hudson County Columbus Day Parade Committee's Spokeswoman Mary Avagliano, who is a former Jersey City councilwoman and deputy mayor, wants to thank all the North Hudson County Communities and the Hudson Reporter for all their help in making the countywide parade a success again this year. Thank you also Mrs. Avagliano for working so hard to honor Hudson County!

And so it goes, until next time. See you around town.
