The Hudson County Open Space Advisory Board was created in 2003 for the purpose of funding projects pertaining to open space, park improvements and historic preservation. Half a dozen projects in Jersey City have qualified for funding this year.

Those projects are the Apple Tree House and the Loew's Theatre near Journal Square for historic preservation funding; Reservoir No. 3 in the Heights, the Renovation of Camp Liberty Pool in Liberty State Park, and the Restoration of the Caven Point Soccer Field on Chapel Ave for park improvement funding; and the PRR Harsimus Stem (Sixth Street) Embankment in Downtown Jersey City for open-space funding.

The advisory board authored a final report in late September, with recommendations on what projects should receive funding and how much. The Hudson County Board of Freeholders will give final approval on that funding at a future Freeholder meeting.

Monies for the fund are generated through a property tax assessment and funding is apportioned as follows: 50% for land acquisition; 25% for development/redevelopment, improvement for recreation and conversation projects and 25% for historic preservation projects.
