What will 2006 bring in Hudson County? It looks like there will be heated elections, as usual - municipal races in May in Weehawken and Bayonne, and primary battles to fill seats left open by Sen. Jon Corzine's ascendance to the governorship this month.

Now that the race to build new office buildings on Jersey City's waterfront and residences on Hoboken's west side has calmed a bit, residents are moving in and seeing the benefits of living in Hudson County. As our commercial real estate story inside shows, the year will bring expanded hotels and retail stores for them to enjoy and work in.

As always, our sportswriter Jim Hague has put on his predicting hat for 2006 and has a bevy of prognostications for what the year will bring in scholastic sports.

Look inside this special new year's edition for stories about these and other topics, as well as our in-house psychic's annual humorous predictions for the year to come.

One thing we can't predict this year is the weather, but we're hoping for tamer hurricanes and snowstorms. We offer this humble New Year's Day meteorological prediction: Light during the day, getting darker at night.
