The Hudson Reporter newspaper chain won three major awards this year in the New Jersey Press Association's annual Better Newspaper Contest. The winners were honored last month at a banquet in Trenton.

A first place award was given for the 150th Anniversary Journal celebrating Hoboken's history, which was published by the Reporter group last year. There were also two awards for advertising design.

History journal wins first place

The first place prize in the category of Best New Product Development was awarded to Art Director Jennifer Merrick and Magazine Editor Christopher Zinsli for their work on the 150th Anniversary Journal celebrating Hoboken's history. The special publication came out last year.

Merrick, who has been recognized several times by the NJPA over her last 11 years at the Reporter, was responsible for the layout and overall look of the magazine.

Zinsli said, "It was a huge product that a lot of people contributed to. Everyone involved in putting it together should be proud." He was responsible for editing the written material as well as gathering the pictures, most of which came from archives at the Hoboken Public Library and the Historical Museum.

Though Zinsli received two awards from the NJPA while writing for a college newspaper, this was his first time being recognized with The Hudson Reporter.

Lucha Malato, the paper's co-publisher, said, "My favorite part was learning the history. It was really a lot of fun. I've shared it with hundreds of people, all of who have loved it."

The paper's other publisher, David Unger, said, "Everyone involved did a superb job. We created a historical document that will be referred to for many years to come."

The Anniversary Journal was produced as a tribute to Hoboken's rich cultural history, taking the Hudson Reporter staff seven months to complete. The magazine celebrates the mile-square city from its industrial days to its immigrant waves.

"Many cities have journals produced to commemorate events. What make this one so different is that the historical content, not the advertising, takes precedence," said Robert Foster, Director of the Hoboken Historical Museum."

The award winning publication can be purchased at the museum at Twelfth and Washington streets.

Advertising and graphic design awards

Also this year, sales representative Marybeth Ponik and Graphic Artist Lisa M. Cuthbert won first place for Best Single Black & White Ad, 16" to 31.5", for a local fitness club advertisement in the Bayonne Community News. The Reporter newspaper group bought the Bayonne Community News three years ago.

A second place prize for Best Internal Classified Promotion Idea was presented to Classified Manager Ann Reilly and Graphic Artist Julio Pino. The award-winning Hoboken Reporter house ad intended to sell advertising space in the newspaper was entitled "Make A Big Deal." This year's award is a first for both individuals.
