As a lifelong advocate of open space and an advocate and user of Liberty State Park, I was appalled at seeing a 200 feet long by 10 feet high hill of dirt dumped right in front of the best view of lower Manhattan. I later learned this was the foundation for the New Jersey 9/11 Memorial.
I ask readers to urge the Governor to change this design. This design also is to include two huge 30 feet high by 200 feet long steel walls that with the hill, will obliterate views of the river, lower Manhattan and the historic terminal itself.
All of this, right at the park's most visited area. This area is one of our nation's most sacred sites, made even more so, with the role that the park and terminal played in aiding the evacuees from New York on 9/11.
This design engulfs the entire North Plaza and destroys open space that had been enjoyed by countless millions of people. This design is a huge view-blocker. There has to be a better way to memorialize this tragedy than by blocking so many views.
The Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. pays honor to many of our fallen loved ones, but it doesn't block any of the views on our National Mall.
I hope anyone who is interested in protecting LSP to help stop this defilement of the Terminal and robbery of our views and to attend the Wednesday, August 16th public meeting in the park by the Terminal Plaza Hill from 6:30 p.m. until dark.
