Several entries were of some of the beautiful views that can only be found in Hudson County. A few were of events that are special to Hudson County. And the overwhelming majority took pictures of your pets. (Perhaps next time we should simply run a best photo of your pet contest!?)
While some of the pictures were breathtaking or cute like the ones shown on these pages, none captured our interest like the first place winner, John Adamowicz. He will get a $50 restaurant gift certificate to Court Street. Not only did he take pictures depicting "Life in Hudson County," but all his shots told a story. Thanks again to all that participated and stay tuned for our next competition this fall.
THE CRASH - Shortly after 10:30 p.m. on a rainy night in Jersey City Heights, John Adamowicz heard a crash. Adamowicz had just taken in the last of the groceries when he heard the sound. A couple seconds longer in the car, flipping through the stations or waiting for the rain to slow down could have tipped the balance. He narrowly missed being crushed by this tree that smashed through his windshield.
THE DAMAGE - The next day, Adamowicz and his wife surveyed the damage to their Jeep Wrangler. In addition to the three separations along the frame, the driver's side seat was crushed. According to the fire department, they estimated the tree to weight 22k. Adamowicz said that seven guys couldn't lift the tree.
STILL WAITING - It was seven days before the tree was removed. The Fire Department wasn't permitted to remove it because it was on private property. Adamowicz had to find a tree removal company, which isn't an easy task in Hudson County.
3 MEN, 2 CHAINSAWS, 1 TREE - After hiring a tree removal company in Camden, Adamowicz was finally able to get rid of the tree. It took the three men three hours to cut apart the tree with two chainsaws and a hack saw.
ALL THAT REMAINS - This stump is the only reminder from the 22k pound tree. Adamowicz considers himself lucky that it was only the Jeep that got crushed. And puppy Maya thinks it makes a great seat!
