On and around this Monday, Sept. 11, hundreds will gather at local churches, synagogues and parks.
Perhaps the biggest event will be in Bayonne, where they will dedicate their mammoth "teardrop" monument donated by Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. Prominent guests who have been invited include former President Bill Clinton, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, state Sen. and Bayonne Mayor Joseph Doria, and Assemblyman and West New York Mayor Albio Sires.
The ceremony will be held at the Peninsula development at Bayonne Harbor, the former Military Ocean Terminal, at 2:30 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine. See below for more details of this and other ceremonies around the county.
Union City
In Union City, Mayor Brian Stack and the Board of Commissioners have scheduled an observance ceremony for Monday, Sept. 11 at Doric Park, located next to the Doric Temple on Palisade Avenue. The ceremony is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
West New York
On Sept. 11, the city of West New York is scheduled to host a ceremony at 8:46 a.m., the time of the first plane crash into the World Trade Center towers, at the park located on 60th Street and Boulevard East.
North Bergen
North Bergen is holding a memorial service at 8:30 a.m. in front of the North Bergen High School at 7317 Kennedy Blvd., near the monument that was erected to remember the three North Bergen graduates who died in the tragedy. All flags in the township will fly at half mast.
Secaucus
Secaucus will be holding a ceremony at the Secaucus Public Library at 1379 Paterson Plank Road at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. The names of Secaucus residents who died in the 2001 terror attacks will be read.
The library will also be hosting an art exhibit called "Reflections and Remembrance of September 11," which will run through Sept. 14.
Guttenberg
Guttenberg will hold its ceremonies in front of Town Hall at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning, with Mayor David Delle Donna presiding. There will be representatives from the police and North Hudson Regional & Fire departments on hand and Guttenberg resident James Hannon will speak, honoring his nephew, Dana, a New York City firefighter, who was also killed during the terrorist attacks.
Hoboken
Several events will be held in Hoboken. They include:
Interfaith service on Pier A
The city has announced that, with the aid of the Hoboken Clergy Coalition, it will hold an interfaith service at 6 p.m. on Sept. 11.
The event will take place at Pier A Park on the south waterfront, and will last approximately 30 minutes. The service will include interfaith prayers and readings by members of the Hoboken Clergy Coalition, as well as musical interludes. The service will take place near the entrance of the park by the memorial flame, which bears the names of those who died in the attacks.
Ringing of the church bell
All Saints Episcopal Church at the corner of Seventh and Washington streets will ring a special church bell at 8:46 a.m. and at 9:03 a.m., the times when the planes hit the towers.
The bell itself is a gift from the families of the victims to the church for its support since the tragedy. All Saints has been one of the leaders in helping the families cope with the realities of 9/11.
Laurie Wurm, a missioner of All Saints, said the church will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. so the public will have the opportunity to sit and pray during the day.
Our Lady of Grace
Our Lady of Grace Church, 400 Willow Ave., will hold a special 7:30 p.m. Mass for Peace on Sept.10. Prayer cards will be distributed to all participants, and Andrew Cyr, the pastoral associate for music and liturgy, will perform special organ music. Jersey City

The Friends of Liberty State Park
The Friends of Liberty State Park will be holding its fourth annual memorial planting for the victims of 9/11 on Sept. 9 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the park. Volunteers will meet behind the park's CRRNJ Terminal sheds. Parking will be available in the Zapp Drive ferry lot. For more information, call (201) 915-3418.
9/11 Memorial Committee of Jersey City
The 9/11 Memorial Committee of Jersey City will hold a memorial service on Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the 9/11 Monument where Grand Street meets the Hudson River. For more information call (201) 332-3117.
At Newport
The community of Newport will hold a 9/11 memorial service on Sept. 11 at Newport Town Square from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The tribute will include a brass band, harp players and professional soloists along with a flower-laying ceremony at the Newport 9/11 memorial. At Journal Square
A 9/11 memorial ceremony will be held at the fountain in Journal Square on Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. There will also be a ceremony for the newest inductees into the Circle of Honor.
The inductees are: former Jersey City Mayor Frank Hague (1917-1947), former Mayor Thomas F.X. Smith (1977-1981); Former Ward C Councilman Arnold Bettinger; civic activist June Spinello; Thomas "Tex" Reilly, who worked as a police officer in Journal Square; and Domenick Infantes, a police officer killed in the line of duty in July of 2001. A catered reception will be held at 6 p.m. at the Loew's Jersey Theater.
Hudson County Community College
Hudson County Community College will conduct a number of activities to mark the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11. The events will take place in the college's student lounge at 25 Pathside, which is adjacent to the Journal Square PATH Station in Jersey City.
On Monday, Sept. 11, solemn moments of silence will be observed on the HCCC campuses to commemorate the lives of those individuals who perished in the World Trade Center. These moments of silence are scheduled for 9:59 a.m. (the time the South Tower fell) and 10:29 a.m. (the time the North Tower fell).
"We hope everyone in our community will join us in these minutes of silent remembrance," said HCCC Director of Student Activities Ophelia Morgan.
Throughout the day, students, faculty and staff members as well as Hudson County residents and workers are invited to visit the Student Lounge and view an exhibit of photographs and other works of art that relate to the Sept. 11, 2001 events. In addition, visitors may records their thoughts and feelings regarding 9/11 and its impact upon their lives on the paper scroll posted by the Student Lounge.

Bayonne
Bayonne has four events planned.
Bayonne memorial dedicated
On Sept. 11 the Bayonne will dedicate "To the Struggle Against World Terrorism," the memorial to the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. The ceremony will be held at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, the former Military Ocean Terminal, at 2:30 p.m.
The monument is a gift from the Russian Federation to the United States of America.
Color guards from the U.S. Army, the Bayonne Police and Fire Departments, and local veterans' organizations will open the event.
Members of the public who would like to attend the event may arrive by either car or Light Rail, beginning at 12:30 p.m. For security and logistical reasons, the audience is requested to arrive by 2 p.m. Those arriving by car should enter the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor from Route 440 (formerly Route 169). Follow the signs to the parking area.
For security and logistical reasons, members of the audience will not be allowed to bring their own chairs. Ice chests will not be permitted at the event. At the end of the ceremonies, the audience will be invited to come forward to look at the memorial and the inscribed paving stones nearby, and to place flowers at the base of the memorial. Flowers will be distributed for this purpose at the event.
Following the program, shuttle buses will transport the public back to the parking areas and the Light Rail Station as long as is necessary. For information, call (212) 843-8077.
Bayonne night service
The "September 11th...Bayonne Remembers" Committee will host its annual candlelight memorial service on Monday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. This year the event has been moved to the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor (the former Military Ocean Terminal) so it will be next to the new monument. In previous years, this event took place on First Street at Mayor Dennis P. Collins Park.
The candlelight service will include color guards from the Bayonne Police and Fire departments and local veterans' organizations. Members of the Bayonne Interfaith Clergy will offer prayers, readings and reflections. Local public school students will provide musical selections. Mayor Joseph V. Doria Jr. will give brief remarks.
Members of the public who wish to attend the event may park in designated areas at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor beginning at 6 p.m.
Bayonne Medical Center
Bayonne Medical Center will be hosting a Sept. 11 Memorial Service on the front lawn of the medical center at 12 noon on Monday, Sept. 11, 2006.
Bayonne Medical Center will not only remember those lost on that tragic day but also honor the members of the BMC family who made outstanding contributions to volunteer where they were needed.
Calvary Episcopal Church
Calvary Episcopal Church, Avenue C at 45th Street, will dedicate the 10 a.m. service on Sept. 10 to all those who lost their lives on 9/11, those who helped in the rescue effort and those who lost loved ones in the attacks. For more information, call (201) 339-3112.
