Alcohol and cars kill. Chris Campos' DWI is no laughing matter. It should not be swept under the rug.
It's a public safety issue. A crime that Campos, as a councilman who took an oath to uphold the laws and a West New York law enforcement prosecutor, should be held fully accountable for by removal from office. Otherwise it sends the wrong message. DWI will not be seen as a serious public safety threat by criminals who appear before Campos in WNY Court and people charged with DWI crimes on Hoboken streets.
DWI is a serious crime that results in death. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention, during 2006, 16,885 people in the U.S died in DWI crashes, representing 39 percent of all car-related deaths. According to the U.S. Justice Department, in 2005, nearly 1.4 million drivers were arrested for DWI. 414 children age14 and younger dies of DWI drivers.
This is a public safety issue, not politics. Just because Campos is a councilman, lawyer and prosecutor does not mean he is above or immune from the law, regardless of where he did the crime. There simply is no excuse. It's reported that a call was placed to see if Campos should get special treatment and cover up his breaking the law. The NJ Attorney General and U.S. Attorney Chris Christie should investigate whether Campos was using his power to set himself free for breaking the law.
At a time when the governor is attempting to bring integrity back to public office, a good example to set would be for Campos to resign his two taxpayer paid jobs as a Councilman and Prosecutor. If not, Mayors Vega and Roberts should publicly condemn his actions and call for his removal from office.
Campos is not an ordinary citizen. He is a lawyer, prosecutor and councilman and should know better! Campos, who sits on the Council's Public Safety Committee, has compromised his ability to uphold public safety and DWI public policy. He must be held to the same standard as those who commit DWIs and pay for the crime.
Failure to remove him from office or for him to resign will send the wrong message to the youth who tragically are killed as a result of drinking and driving. Campos is now the poster child of DWI crime.
