Dear Editor:

What if you had no means to buy the book you wanted to read. You would go to your local library, of course. Yet, what if you couldn't get there. Then what would you do?

The Bookmobile has been the mobile branch library for the Jersey City Free Public Library since March 1954. With 53 years of service, the Bookmobile remains one of the most popular branches in usage.

Providing lending service five days a week (and seven-day weeks, with a proficient vehicle) throughout the year - rain or shine - the Bookmobile serves children and adults, and stops at daycare centers; public, charter and private schools; senior citizen housing; parks and recreational centers and the business and private sectors.

The Bookmobile, with its colorful and visible signage promoting the Library, traverses Jersey City neighborhoods, including The Heights, Journal Square, the Marion section, Newport, Greenville, Lafayette, Exchange Place, among many other areas of the city. Just in 2006 alone, 2,750 children and 785 adults checked out 2,050 and 1,034 books, respectively, from the Bookmobile. Seniors, who may have difficulty traveling to a destination, especially love the Bookmobile for its consistent convenience. In 1999,the Bookmobile scored as having the Top Reader for the Summer Reading Program, with a young girl having read and reported on 107 books!

The Jersey City Free Public Library Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization, with its Federal tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable designation conferred on January 27, 2004, and has been created for the sole purpose of raising money for the capital improvement of the 118-year-old Jersey City library system.
