Dear Editor:

Hoboken celebrated its 20th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in grand fashion to honor Irish heritage and culture.

As always, my thanks to the Cunning Family for their dedication to this great parade.

The first Saturday of March has made Hoboken a regional destination. It is estimated that as many as 35,000 visitors - nearly the size of Hoboken's population - participated last weekend. It was truly a remarkable day for all of us to be Irish, at least for one afternoon.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of municipal employees and other participants who contributed to the day. I would like to thank Police Chief LaBruno, Fire Chief Cassesa, Environmental Services Director Peluso and their fine employees for contributing to the event's success. Concurrently, I am extremely pleased with the cooperation of the hospitality industry which instituted and strictly followed a "zero tolerance" policy for patron responsibility and upholding quality of life issues for our community, as specified by municipal code.

Were there some problems? Sure, this was a monumental event that grows by leaps and bounds every year. The sheer volume of participants makes it challenging, to say the least. Still, working together with the hospitality industry, the interests of the citizens of Hoboken were paramount.

Let's work to build on this foundation for future years and future events. Working as a team, Hoboken proves its well earned reputation as one of the best communities in New Jersey.

Mayor David Roberts
