Dear Editor:

This letter is written on behalf of the Church of God of Prophesy located on 3rd and Jackson Street. Normally, we wouldn't write letters of endorsement but in this case we felt it is warranted. We have been a part of this 4th Ward Community for about 20 years, while some of our membership for over 50 years. Therefore, we wanted to be sure to add our input to this Fourth Ward Election.

For the last six years, Christopher Campos has been the Councilman of the Fourth Ward. When he was elected, our neighborhood already faced tremendous challenges due to years of neglect by politicians of old. Every four years in Hoboken we would receive promises from politicians, with very little follow through. Hoboken Housing Authority residents would be exploited for their votes with very little in return to show.

Today the Fourth Ward is a changing community; however, we still remain a strong and visible presence. The Housing Authority went through a period of turmoil where capital funds were being misused. Christopher Campos was the most outspoken critic. When people need help with rent, food for Thanksgiving or Christmas presents for the families, Councilman Campos was there. But most importantly, when the Church of God of Prophesy opposed a variance for a building being constructed right next to our church, Councilman Campos was there for our Church. Not only did he try to negotiate a better alternative, but when that failed, Chris went to the zoning board and opposed the project as we requested, even though the builder is well known in Hoboken. The streetscape project was completed along Jackson Street, traffic light added at 1st and Monroe St., the HHA renovations are being done and five play areas have been added or refurbished in and around the Fourth Ward (two in HHA, Jackson St. Park, Madison St. and Jubilee Center). So if progress is the litmus test, Councilman Campos has done a good job of getting resources into our neglected ward.

Whether you're new or old, ethnic or not, two things are certain: (1) the problems we have in our community did not begin with Chris Campos and (2) he has worked for the community - all the time, not just during elections.

Very truly yours
Virgel Nieves
