Lugo, who was drafted by the then-Montreal Expos three years ago and is currently toiling in the Washington Nationals' organization, has been pitching lights out over the last 10 games, after starting the season on shaky ground.
Lugo has not given up a run in his last four relief outings, spanning seven-plus innings and striking out eight for the Suns and over the last 10 games. He has a 1-0 record with a 2.11 ERA.
For the season, Lugo has seen action in 25 games and has a 1-2 record with a 6.02 ERA. But the numbers are dropping steadily since that rough start.
It appears as if Lugo's future is as a relief pitcher, with his fine fastball and sharp breaking curve.
For Hoboken fans, the last chance to see Lugo this season will take place August 24-25, when the Suns make their last trip to Lakewood to face the BlueClaws.
Earlier this season, Lugo pitched against the BlueClaws and had to face reigning National League MVP Ryan Howard, who was playing in Lakewood as part of his rehabilitation assignment.
It's safe to say that there aren't many sluggers like Howard currently playing in the South Atlantic League. We'll keep you posted on Lugo's exploits for the remainder of the season...
St. Anthony High School basketball standout Tyshawn Taylor was a major hit at the recent Reebok Camp in Philadelphia and the talented Taylor watched his stock as a college prospect go through the roof.
Taylor will only be a junior this season, but he's already being touted as one of the premier players in the country. He will have his choice of the lot when it comes to big-time college programs.
The Friars will begin the upcoming season as one of the nation's best teams and will be ranked as high as No. 4 by RISE Magazine and perhaps higher by USA Today and Street & Smith's...
Speaking of St. Anthony, assistant coach Ben Gamble will hold his annual basketball camp for boys and girls ages 8 to 14, at the Golden Door Charter School in Jersey City. The camp will run from August 6-14. For more information on the camp, contact Gamble at (201) 936-5716. Chances are that a handful of former Friar greats will be on hand for Gamble's camp, so it will be worthwhile for all youngsters in the area...
Also St. Peter's College men's basketball coach John Dunne will hold his camp this week, beginning Monday, July 16, at SPC's Yanitelli Center. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Former Seton Hall standout and Cleveland Cavalier first-round draft pick John Morton, one of Dunne's assistant coaches, is one of the camp directors. For more information, contact Morton at (201) 915-9105 or (908) 256-3747...
Another former SPC assistant coach Rob Kurzinsky has been named as the new head men's basketball coach at Kean University. He will also work the camp at SPC this week.
Nothing against Kurzinsky, who is a fine coach in his own right, but what did Jersey City native Sean Drennan do wrong at the school that caused him to lose his job?
Drennan led the Cougars to a 14-12 record in the highly competitive world of the New Jersey Athletic Conference and had his team playing hard every single night. For his reward, he's shown the door? Sometimes, local colleges make moves that boggle the mind.
Sean Drennan is an excellent coach and he will land on his feet. His old man, Bill "Red" Drennan, the head coach at Dickinson, knows fully well that Sean is so far better of a coach than the old man ever was...
Speaking of St. Peter's College, rumors have it that there are several of the incoming freshmen who gave a commitment to the SPC football program, only to see the school pull the rug out from under the program last month, are now contemplating lawsuits against the school, citing fraud and withholding of information. It could get very ugly...
The Hudson County Parks Department made a huge commitment recently when it announced that two of the more used facilities in Lincoln Park in Jersey City will be converted to FieldTurf in the coming months. Those fields directly adjacent to Route 440 are so heavily used and need to be maintained. The county is doing the right thing by putting down the artificial surface and making it safer for all to use...
Speaking about top-flight facilities, the one that is almost done on the waterfront in Weehawken is a sight to behold. The township of Weehawken just recently reached an agreement with Stevens Institute of Technology so that the Ducks could use the Weehawken facility as an extra home field.
But more importantly, these Little League, softball and multi-purpose facilities are a boon to a town like Weehawken, which has had to rely on Weehawken Stadium time and time again. This was a move in the right direction and the facility should be open for regular use very shortly. Congrats to Weehawken on getting the field and park built...-- Jim Hague
