Police have released the sketches of a sexual attacker that has struck as many as three different women in West New York during March.
The two different sketches released last Tuesday resulted from two different victims' accounts of the man, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.
A third victim's description (the woman managed to escape the attacker by shutting the door to her building), according to DeFazio, "is similar to the description given by the two victims."
Authorities have described the suspect as a young male between 18 and 20 years old. The suspect has an athletic build and measures between 5-foot-10-inches and 6-feet tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds. He has dark hair and dark eyes and, according to DeFazio, speaks English with no accent as well as Spanish. He is described as having no facial hair.
During one incident, the attacker was wearing a dark red baseball cap and was last seen wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt. The suspect also has a circular birthmark or scar, approximately 1 inch in diameter, on his right upper thigh. The suspect's handgun, used in all three sex attacks, is a silver and black semi-automatic, according to officials.
"Hopefully somebody will recognize him," said DeFazio, adding, "If anybody else was confronted by this individual, we would ask [that] they come forward."
The suspect's most recent sex-crime occurred at gunpoint on 53rd Street and Hudson Avenue on March 15 after a failed attempt to attack another woman one block away.
Police have linked the attacker to a similar incident that occurred March 5. All three attacks have occurred within a 1,500-foot radius of 53rd Street and Hudson Avenue, the site of the most recent attack.
"We don't know if there were any other potential victims but sometimes people are confronted and [they] don't report it," said DeFazio, adding, "We could use the cooperation of anyone who may have seen this individual."
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Hudson County Special Victims Unit at (201) 915-1234 or the West New York Police Department at (201) 295-5000.
Regarding the location of the events, DeFazio said, "It's possible [he may live in the area], knows people in area, or has worked in the area in the past."
DeFazio added that the suspect's main objective of the attacks is sexual, not theft-related, and uses the gun as a primary means of "facilitating the submission of women."
Back-to-back
On Saturday, March 15 at 4 a.m., a 29-year-old woman who was coming home from work was confronted at gunpoint, outside of her car at 53rd Street and Hudson Avenue just down the block from West New York's Early Childhood School, which is near a church. The attacker forced her back into the car, said DeFazio. After driving a short distance, the woman was forced to commit a sex act and was consequently robbed, said DeFazio.
The attacker also struck earlier that same night at 3 a.m., when he confronted a 53-year-old woman near the entrance of her building at 52nd Street and Hudson Avenue. The suspect threatened her at gunpoint where he attempted a similar crime, according to DeFazio, but fortunately the woman was able to escape by slamming and locking her building's front door.
Authorities believe the attacker is the same one who struck at a Palisade Avenue business on March 5.
According to DeFazio, at around 7 a.m., the attacker attempted to rape a 26-year-old woman before robbing her and threatening to kill her if she called police.
