In the three statewide journalism contests run this year, the Hudson Reporter chain of weekly newspapers won significant honors for its articles, art, and special projects. A big winner was the company's new regional magazine, Palisade.

In the annual New Jersey Press Association awards announced in February, the NJPA awarded the company's new magazine, Palisade, first place in their Best New Product Development 2007 category.

The magazine's editor was Theta Pavis. Its art director is Jennifer Martiak and its senior designer is George Fedor.
The requirement for that category was: "Best advertising idea or service designed to produce new revenue for retail. Includes, but not be limited to, specialty or niche publications. Product must have premiered in 2007. Entries must include a brief explanation, describing the idea, additional revenue gained and any promotional material used to sell. Development of product idea, presentation and application will be additional criteria used for judging."

The judges were given this explanation: "Palisade magazine (Life Along the Hudson) was created to cover the metamorphosis taking place along the western bank of the Hudson River. From the revived neighborhoods of Downtown Jersey City to the new luxury developments lining the waterfront in southern Bergen County, this area has gone through a tremendous transformation. Palisade magazine gives newcomers a sense of community and helps long-time residents explore the new boutiques, restaurants and art galleries opening every day. It's the place to turn for resources, entertainment and a bird's-eye view of this evolving region."

Also in the contest, Lisa Cuthbert won a number of awards for advertisements she designed for the Reporter newspapers: first place for "Secaucus for the Holidays," second place for "Happy Holidays in Hudson," and third place for "Bayonne: Experience the Variety." In fact, she swept the entire category.

In addition, art director Jennifer Martiak won first place for the chain's Dining Book in the category "Best Free Standing Insert Built by Newspaper for Single Advertiser or Group of Advertisers."

Of the awards, Martiak said, "I am truly proud of our editorial, advertising, and art departments. All the staff here at the Hudson Reporter is dedicated to each and every one of our publications, and we are grateful for the recognition. I am honored to be a part of this highly creative group and congratulate all the winners and staff."

Writing awards
The Reporter also recently won several writing awards in a contest run by the Society of Professional Journalists, New Jersey chapter. The awards were presented at a luncheon on June 21.

The Reporter's series called "Our Creepy County," which premiered last year around Halloween and detailed UFOs, bats, and the history of the county psychiatric asylum, won second place in series reporting. Writers contributing to the series included Tricia Tirella, Madeline Friedman, and Jim Hague.

In addition, Ricardo Kaulessar and Chris Zinsli won third place in magazine writing for their story in Jersey City Magazine, "Beyond the Boom."

"I feel honored to have received the award for this story along with my former colleague Chris Zinsli," Kaulessar said last week. "This article represents some of my best work at the Hudson Reporter."

For magazine writing, Palisade was a big winner again, landing two major writing awards.

Editor Theta Pavis won first place in feature writing with her story "Momtrepreneurs" (Vol.1, Issue 1).

Freelancer Rich Prior won first place for profile writing for his piece "Dan Cordano: Made in Bayonne" (Vol. 1, Issue 3).

GSJ award
Also this year, the Reporter won a writing award in the annual Garden State Journalists contest, sponsored by New Jersey Business magazine.

Just as with the SPJ contest, the series "Our Creepy County" won an award for series reporting.

The chain's editor-in-chief, Caren Matzner, said, "The variety of awards we've won shows the diverse talent we have in our company. In these contests, we're competing with all of the other newspapers in the state, and in some of them, we were competing with dailies in New York and Pennsylvania. Our staff did a great job."

The chain's co-owner, Lucha Malato, said, "The Hudson Reporter staff is very dedicated to all our publications. It's really nice to see them recognized. I'm very proud of their work."

Malato co-owns the chain with David Unger.
