I am appalled that my children are in a Hoboken public school with no recess. (It's shocking, especially when there is an epidemic of childhood obesity and diabetes.) His teacher complains that her class is out of control. I wonder why? They don't even get a break to play and socialize; even prisoners get an outdoor break. I'm sure if they had at least a 15 minute break to run around and get fresh air they'd be more calm and relaxed and ready to work.
I was told the lack of recess was due to the teachers' contracts and/or the amount of funding/teaching hours necessary for school grants. This should be an outrage to parents. Shouldn't our children's well being be more important than teachers' contracts or test scores? It's no wonder there are such long waiting lists for admissions to the charter schools.
