JERSEY CITY – A spokesperson for the Jersey City Police Department said that a 22-year old man from Jersey City died as a result of driving his car into the Morris Canal early in the morning on 2014. The report came in about 3:30 a.m. said Bob McHugh.

Witnesses originally thought that the vehicle contained two or three people, but after divers from the New York City Police divers unit investigated, there was only one victim, whose name has not yet been released.

The vehicle, travelling south on Marion Drive, entered the marina parking lot near the Sand Bar restaurant and crashed through the barrier and plunged into the yacht boat basin. The man was taken to nearby Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Army Corps of Engineers and the Jersey City Police Department diver unit at some point later on New Year's Day were expected to bring up the vehicle using a crane mounted on a ship.
