“Arriving firefighters confronted a fully involved garbage truck with fire in the engine compartment and extension to the cab and garbage/container area,” said Rogers.
Three trucks supplied water to extinguish the fire, and the garbage truck was towed off the extension bridge into Newark where Newark firefighters further extinguished its smoldering content. There were no known injuries.
The truck was reportedly owned by the New York City Department of Sanitation.
The truck fire had taken place west of the bridge span, in the west-bound lane. Traffic was held up in the west-bound lane for more than an hour.
The New Jersey State Police and New Jersey Turnpike Authority also operated at the scene. --Joseph Passantino
