Funeral services were held July 15 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Jersey City, for James “Zimp” Smith, 89, of Roselle, formerly of Jersey City. He passed away July 6. A Tuskegee Airman, he served in World War II. He was the first African-American business owner to own and operate a franchise, a restaurant known as Zimps. James “Zimp” Smith Way in Jersey City was dedicated in his honor.

Surviving are his wife, Constance Johnson Smith; a son, Garrett Smith; a daughter, Dolores Smith (Alvin); three grandchildren, Travis Amaker and Taylor and Tara Smith; a great grandchild, Xaire; two sisters-in-law, Mary Gilbert and Chris Gayle. Services arranged by the G.G. Woody Funeral Home, Roselle.
