Dear Editor:

The upcoming November city elections provides Ward E residents with a rare opportunity. With Mayor Fulop choosing not to select a particular candidate for his ticket, all of the candidates will have to earn the seat on their own. We are lucky to have several qualified candidates for the seat. I can say any of them will be outstanding councilmembers, and have the benefit of independence while also knowing how to work as part of a team.

Among the field, there is one candidate who I believe has distinguished herself with her past experience as well as her work ethic in the campaign. I therefore enthusiastically endorse Rebecca Symes for the Ward E seat.

Rebecca has a distinguished track record of public service. She has worked for Housing Conservation Coordinators, Inc., a non-profit that represents the interests of tenants and advocates for affordable housing. She has served as the President of the Harsimus Cove Association, one of Downtown’s most active and involved neighborhood associations. She also serves on the board of Trustees of the Jersey City Free Public Library and The Waterfront Project, a free legal clinic that helps our city’s poorest residents with housing issues.

Rebecca also has developed a progressive platform to ensure Jersey City prospers and that all residents can share in that prosperity. She has innovative ideas for housing, budgeting, business development, and public safety. I am impressed with how Rebecca is able to focus on day to day, bread and butter issues while also maintaining a long term view of the future of Jersey City. Rebecca will be an engaged, innovative, and dynamic councilwoman. I am proud to endorse her candidacy.

Joshua Parkhurst
