NORTH BERGEN -- North Bergen High School students are participating in the national student walkout against gun violence March 14, according to Mayor Nicholas Sacco.

The walkout's purpose is to demand Congress act on passing gun control legislation to quell school shootings. A recent school shooting in Florida, killing 17 students and teachers, prompted the walkout. Women's March Youth EMPOWER, a movement harnessing women's political power, organized the walkout.

Students will walk out of the school at 10 a.m. that day, Sacco said. Town officials will also be joining them, he said.

The walkout will come 12 days after someone placed a "threat" on the school's bathroom walls, to be carried out March 5. However, that day turned out to be an average one, with higher police presence at the school.
