UNION CITY -- A local man died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound after police confronted him with a handgun, according to a press release from the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

At 5:15 a.m. on Sept. 12, Union City police received a 911 call from the 2000 block of Bergenline Avenue. After arriving, officers made contact with an alleged female victim, who directed them to a second-floor apartment.

There, the officers found a a 57-year-old male -- whom the release did not identify -- allegedly holding a handgun. He then proceeded to shoot himself in the head, the release says.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. During this confrontation, one of the officers deployed a taser. In accordance with the NJ Attorney General directive regarding tasters, that deployment is being investigated.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the case with help from Union City police and the Regional Medical Examiner's Office.
