Some of the greatest writers in history have used the written word as a balm for real-life pain, using fiction, poetry, or non-fiction as a way of looking back and finding meaning in their personal experiences.

For author David K. Bartoo, his new memoir, “Her Lying Eyes,” becomes a vehicle for self-examination, a journey through his own painful experiences – not only to memorialize the emotional drama he experienced, but also to perhaps find in words what real life denied him: a reason why.

In describing his book, Bartoo recalls his growing up and his love of fiction – especially science fiction.
_____________

“I always wanted to write stories like Stephen King. I always thought my first book would be a horror novel.” – David K. Bartoo
________

“Ever since I was a kid growing up in Trinidad, I was imaginative and creative,” he wrote. “I wanted to write horror and science fiction stories. I was inspired by the stories I heard growing up from the elderly people in the village. It was local folklore. TV was not the main source of entertainment like it is today. In the evenings, the grandparents, moms, dads, and children would gather around. The old folks would talk about their encounters with the supernatural, even stories that were handed down from their fathers and grandfathers. So I always thought my first book would be about horror stories that I heard growing up. Life does not always go according to your plans. This book, however, is about my real horror story.”

Driven to seek a better life in the United States after a downturn in the economy in his own country, Bartoo’s book details some the hopes and aspirations he had in coming to America, the struggles he had in obtaining them, and later, the sad turn of events that let the dream slip away. Many of the locations are familiar to local readers, such as sites in Jersey City and even in Bayonne, where his memories take long steps in this personal epic.

A resident of Bayonne for about three years, Bartoo sets his book in contemporary Hudson County – in particular in Jersey City. Yet, he tried to emulate some of the storytelling techniques he heard growing up.

“I always wanted to write stories like Stephen King,” he said during a recent interview. “I always thought my first book would be a horror novel.”

In this tale of heart break, Bartoo recounts his efforts to achieve the American Dream, and (as with many great, tragic tales) recounts the unraveling of that dream.

“The book took me about a year and half to write,” he said. “I really wanted to get this story out. Sometimes, I couldn’t even sleep at night.”

Bartoo said it was a story that needed to be told, and he could not stop until it was out of him. Like many great books of literature, “Her Lying Eyes” attempts to serve as a tale of warning for those who rush into love blindly.

Published by Xlibris, one of the better self-publishing houses, the book is available on line as well as locally at Unique Books on Broadway at a cost of $25 for hardcover and $15 for soft cover.

Although this book might have exploded out of him in an intense urgency, the book did not stop him from continuing his original plans.

“I’m working on my next book now,” he said.

This time, he is writing a book of fiction, a collection of horror short stories.

With this kind of drive, he might just get to be the next Stephen King after all.

For your information his wife did not dump him. If you read the book you stupid MR SYNN FUCKIN ASSHOLE you will know he divorce his wife 13 yrs ago for stealing all his hard earn money that was for his kids future and his idiot wife future. I read the book twice I must say it is a good read and It broke my heart, because I went through a very nasty divorce after 10yrs of marriage and 3 kids, at least my wife had the love in her heart for our kids so she did not leave without them. She kept the kids so I could get back on my feet, in Mr D's case I could only imagine how hard it was for him. This is one very important part in the book I guess you did not read MR SYNN FUCKIN ASSHOLE.

According to the book she left the kids with Mr D. so she could be FREE to party with Mr K. and do what ever drugs they are doin, as you know she had an apt already set up with mattress etc, so her plans was to move out anyway, she was just lookin for a good excuse to get out so the kids would have been extra baggage.

So comin back to you Mr SYNN FUCKIN ASSHOLE it take's a real man to step up to the plate an stick with his kids through it all.

About child support which is not mention in the book, but anyway if it was a woman in his position takin care of the kids she will be gettin child support from the husband, I think it is only fair that he get's some kind of support from her cuz I do the same thing I take care of my kids because there are mines.

One question Mr SYNN FUCKIN ASSHOLE you seem to know a little more than what's in the book you seem to be offended by the book. are you Mr K. ??

Keep one thing in mind what goes around comes around.....

TUMBS UP for this book you could tell it was written from the heart FOR ONCE READ THE HUSBAND SIDE OF THE STORY WE ALL BEEN THERE. I COULD SEE THIS BOOK IN THE FUTURE BEING A MOVIE....GOOD LUCK MR DAVID K BARTOO.....

I agree with DeathDealer,

To me you sound like a fat dyke with too much time on your hands. Ok, I read the book and i found it to be very good for a first time writer. Some parts even brought tears to my eyes. How can you defend a woman like "Nancy"?Unless you did the same thing she did .You said she dumped him, but according to the book, Dennis was the one who threw her out of the house.Did you even read the book ,you lying piece of shit.

first of all, everyone has to remember and let's be logical here, this is the man's first book. of course he's not going to write in comparison of Stephen King as of yet. The story actually has a different feel to it, cause it is a Real Life story, it's different for most people this isn't everyday life. it's something out of the ordinary and one way to express it was through the pages of a book.

as for the bozo "synn" do urself a favor and go back to reading goosebumps children books if your looking for a thrill. most people won't understand the pain and suffering this man went through, and in my own opinion for someone to write and share events like this in his life, I think it takes alot of b@lls.

it's a great read for anyone that wants to read something new, and get insight on someone else's life.

And it sounds like this "synn" person pretends to know this man personally, like seriously get a life. he did something productive and wrote a book. and as far as what ur saying about child support is true, then I say I support David Bartoo 100%, just because after the things that, that woman put him through, she deserves more than just a child support suit...she belongs behind bars.

bottom line to everyone else. "Her Lying Eyes" is a decent read, and Im looking foward to David Bartoos next publication.

Reading "her lying eyes" seemed more like story of a man wanting attention. The book did not even seem professionally written. This is no where near stephen kings phenomenal writing. This book ia really going into my trash can i might even burn it. I advise anyone keep away from this class d writer. The book sucks an he sucks major crap.
