SECAUCUS -- Three firefighters in Secaucus who had been accused in a civil lawsuit of being involved in the alleged harassment of two former gay residents were not reinstated to the volunteer fire department at a council meeting Tuesday night. However, amid protests, one of those firefighters was given the job of superintendent of the Department of Public Works.

A contingent of gay activists attended the meeting because there had been talk of reinstating the volunteer firefighters to the department. They had been named in a civil suit that the town lost last year, resulting in a multimillion dollar payout to the gay couple who said they were harassed while living near a firehouse.

The three men were never charged criminally, and resigned from the department rather than face an administrative hearing.

Before Tuesday's council meeting, new Mayor Michael Gonnelli, himself a volunteer firefighter, told the gay activist group Garden State Equality that the three men did not want to be reinstated at this time.

However, he did not mention that one of the men was up for a promotion.

Charles Snyder Sr. had worked for the Department of Public Works since 1974, and had served as assistant superintendent since 2005, according to a newspaper report.

Gonnelli, who himself formerly served as superintendent of public works, was among those backing Snyder's promotion.

The only council member to vote against it was John Shinnick, a political foe of Gonnelli's administration.

Colonemustid who is speaking on Mike's behalf either failed to remember, or has a tendency to lie like our mayor. Sensitivity training did take place after the fire house incident, Mayor Mike took part in it. Why he continues to lie and say it never happened is beyond everyone who participated in the course. Anyway, it's a matter of public record so all the lying in the world which seems fit for Mike to get through his day is neither here nor there becaucse the proof is on paper. It's alway easier to place the blame on the other guy isn't it Mike. Although, I must give you a hand, not even thirty days in office and our town is already facing a lawsuit. Keep up the good work.

Mustid- I am sure Chuck is qualified for the position. That is not the point. Chuck's past actions and the reputation they carry with him should trump his qualifications. He and all public employees, in leadership positions especially, need to be held to a higher standard.

The council should have understood this. Shame on them for reverting to the good ol boy system rather than using common sense. Our leaders seem to lack an ethical compass.

Thank you Mr Big for this post.> If you read other articles recently you would see that the proffesional service contract deletions will save this town $270,000, annually. Two secretaries were also hired last night and that saved money as well. The last Mayor secretary made close to 50K, new one was hired at 35K.

I would bet that some sort of reorganization of departments will occer to save us even more money in the future. Recreation, DPW, Finance and hopefully all others.

Again, if Elwell’s Dems thought it was the right thing to do a few years back and John Shinnick didn’t care for the last three years why was this such a big issue last night? Politics is the answer.

The decision to put Chuck in a position he qualified for and if you remember Mr. Hudson County himself, D. Drumeler (Shinnicks close friend) did the posting process, was the right thing to do. The purely poliical thing was to create an issue and invite the press and the Garden State Equility Group and make a mockery of this town, yet again. Thank you John and it was funny how last night Maddy Michaels hubby was there, Trombetta was there, Makarski was there, Swibinki was there, Albi was there. All were there to orchastrate the SHOW and start the plan that will continue through out this election year.

And also please remember that it was the last administration that failed to impose sensitivity training as per a Secaucus Reporter article during the last election or elthics reform, which in my opinion covers training employees. This is something TBS promised in their platform and I say lets give them time to accomplish this, then knock them if they don’t. They said this long before the carefully orchastrated SHOW had it’s political season premier last night!!!

I think you have to question the new mayor's judgment in this case (as well as the council). These men most likely cost the town almost $5 mil with their careless bigoted behavior. This is not the type of reputation I want running a city hall department, regardless of his previous service. What sort of message is being sent here. At the point the mayor took the oath of office his personal loyalties should have taken a back seat to his responsibility to the Secaucus constituents.

Perhaps I am too idealistic for Hudson County.

I agree with you Duckpond. Snyder has always been a key person in the DPW, someone that is vital to its operations. In some ways he has already been doing the work he just got title to.

But the matter should have been discussed before hand.

The fire department is different.

The three firefighers dishonored their positions and resigned. That should be the end of it.

I was against reinstating these firemen because I knew it would open up old wounds and it did. I have nothing against these guys, but they resigned and it should have just been just left at that. In terms of the promotion of Superintendent of the DPW that is another issue. I don’t have any problem with the selection, my only point is it could have been bought up at a meeting that they will be filling the vacant position and the appointment could have been done in February to give more time to advertise and cover all bases. This position has been vacant for a few years and another couple of weeks wouldn’t make a difference. Rocky start for the new Mayor, but I think he could overcome it and still become a good Mayor.
