HOBOKEN -- Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said today that she will make an announcement tonight at the Hoboken University Medical Center board meeting at 7 p.m.

A source close to the situation believes there may be action taken on sale of the hospital to a private company that will keep the hospital open.

Several years ago, the City Council voted to back the hospital with $52 million in bonds, and the sale to a private management firm may take any financial problems of the hospital off of the taxpayer's back.

This afternoon, Hospital spokeswoman Joan Quigley said that tonight's announcement is unlikely to be an official announcement of a sale, but that there "are likely to be fireworks."

The hospital is located at Third Street and Willow Avenue. -- TJC

Tsk tsk. I don't think any entity that is in tough financial straits can really afford to pay for fireworks right now.

Spring at last. Perhaps this albatross is being taken from us. Let us hope this is good news.
