Dear Editor:
My husband and I are home-owning, tax-paying, and voting residents of Hoboken. Hoboken is our primary residence. Yet, the city is denying us the right to renew our resident parking permit simply because our car is registered at a secondary property we own on Long Island. This is a complete violation of our rights as citizens. Tax-paying, home-owning or not, as long as your car is registered in NJ and you can prove Hoboken is your residence you can obtain a resident pass.
What right does Hoboken have to tell us where we should register our car? What bearing should that have when determining who gets resident parking stickers if residency can be easily proven? It is absolutely not fair that renters in this town can prove residency when home-owners cannot! What other rights will the city council be taking away in the future? It is easy to see the slippery slope an ordinance like this sits upon. All Hoboken residents should be fearful about what they might be denied in the future...no access to public schools, parks, library, etc. Where will it end?

To teddyjo - I never give up a good fight, and this one is worth fighting for.
It's not a matter of residency. It's what the state requires regarding registration. Registration is how Hoboken determines residency, for parking permits. But not when it comes to taking your taxes. They can't have it both ways.
The cost differential in inconsequential, to me. The money I save on insurance, more than allows me enough money to park my vehicle in a garage, when I have it here, anyway. It's not the point.
The point is, why am I not considered a resident, just because I only spend part of the time in NJ? Is the a part-time status, or designation when it comes to paying taxes?
I'd love a refund for all the trash I"m not dumping, all the city services I'm not using, and things that tax dollars go to, that I am not able to take advantage of, while I'm in that other state.
It's simply, unfair.
Since the change in rules, I've decided not to bring my car back here anymore. I don't NEED it here. It was a convenience to bring it, once in awhile, to help mom with groceries, or do stuff. I also brought it here to be maintained by the same garage I've gone to for years.
Not anymore. Hoboken will no longer get money from me for gasoline, a parking garage, or even a silly parking permit. No more tickets for parking somewhere I shouldn't. No more of MY money, that has anything to do with my car.
So, seriously. Who's losing here? Not me.
With the money I save in car insurance, I could rent a car for a month a year free. And I get a new one, each time.
Yeah, well I know the law and hate having to repeat myself. You're obviously online, look it up.
How is primary residence defined? How long do you have before you must change registration and declare NJ your primary state?
When you have dual-residency, as I do, I travel back and forth regularly. But I am a RESIDENT of both states. As a resident, I am entitled to the same rights and privileges, as every other resident.
Just because you are stuck in one place, don't be jealous of me for enjoying life and being able to have certain privileges. Why do you feel parking permits are an exclusive privilege to you, and not to me.
I am a resident, sometimes NJ is my primary, sometimes not. Define resident, will you, please?
People are entitled to dual-residency, and can register their cars, wherever they choose. If the vehicle remains in one state, longer than the other, that is generally the state where it should be registered.
Hoboken law, and even state law, are too narrow, and don't take all situations into consideration.
If you're not in the club, you don't get the benefits. It's also who ya know, in this town.
I'm waiting for the ACLU to contact me.
I will try to find the letters, if the Reporter archives them somewhere.
Hoboken has a right to not issue a resident parking permit to a vehicle which is clearly by your own admission registered out of state.
Solution: Re-Register your vehicle in New Jersey! Problem solved!!
