Question: In high school baseball and softball, left fielder catches a foul fly ball with one foot on foul ground and the other foot entirely in dead ball territory. Is this a legal catch?

Answer: In BB only, this is considered a legal catch as fielder has at least one foot touching live ball territory. (BB – Rule 2, Sec. 9, Art. 1 in Casebook Comments) In SB, this is not a legal catch; fielder needs both feet in live ball area. (SB – Rule 2-9-5)

Question: If outfielder legally catches a fly ball and his/her momentum causes fielder to carry ball into dead ball area, how many bases are awarded runners on base? One or two base awards?)

Answer: If unintentional, catch and carry rule awards runner one base; if judged as intentional action, each runner gains a two base award. (BB – Rule 8, Sec. 3, Art. 3(d); SB – Rule 8-4-3 (i & j)
